On Thursday, July 12, 2007, Phil was painting a house in German Village. While painting a dormer on the third story, the ladder from which Phil was painting slid, causing Phil to fall onto the first floor roof and onto the ground, landing on his head and back. Unfortunately, the impact of the fall has left damage to his spinal cord, causing paralysis from the lower chest and below.
As a result of complications due to his paralysis, Phil passed away on January 20, 2010 at the Kobacher House near Riverside Hospital.

Hey Phil!
Stephanie told me (of course Ken was and is still asleep) of your website this morning. What a wonderful site Megan has created!!
You know we love you and will be there for you with thoughts and prayers and in any other way that we can today, tomorrow, and all the days into the future.
Love, Missy and Ken

Phil,
While you dont know me, a dear freind Tom Greisimer does and his overwhelming concern for you and your recovery has captured my compassion and my attention. I sincerely hope your recovery is speedy and your healing is transforming. I have had the wonderful priviledge to have known many who have overcome and fought with courage, in the face of tremendous physical and emotional obstacles, including my mother who fought with ALS for two years. While your fight is uniquely your own, realize that science and medicine are limited in thier scope of understanding the amazing healing processes that exist within each one of us. I hope very sincerely that you are able to recover and heal to the level of your hopes and dreams and I hope you will fight and strive to overcome this tragedy that has occured.
I am participating in a 270 mile bicycle ride on behalf of ALSTDI, to benifit and raise awareness of ALS, a ride that extends from Boston to White Plains, NY over 3 days (July 20th-22nd). I ride in the name of hope and celebration for all those who are faced with obstacles in healing. In the belief that thoughts and intention can make a difference, I am happy to dedicate the last 3 miles of my ride to your recovery and in the wish that you may one day ride them yourself.
Sincerely,
Shawn Schulte, manager of Staufs Coffee Roasters

Dear Phil,
Reading over Joshua 1 many times…
“Be strong and courageous(He says this 3 times, so I’m thinking He WANTS us to!), because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.-Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified: do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go”
I envision you as a warrior thru this. I am praying for you daily.

Hey Uncle Phil,
If any one can overcome an obstacle like this one I know its you.You can and will prove the doctors wrong.
I never really told you how much I appreciate you and everything you have done for our family and for Tim especially. I’m sorry it took something like this for me to say thank you and I love you. I have always felt that way but never said it. Our family has a lot to love in it and now I am realizing we need to say I love you to each other more. Just assuming everyone knows isn’t good enough, Its nice to hear it sometimes.
That will be a lesson I take away from your experience. I will say I love you more, and never again take for granted the nice things that we as a family do for each other.
Please know that you have tons of people pulling for you and supporting you and loving you everyday, only because of the great person you have been in your life.
I also can tell that you have made an impact on Tim’s life and that you mean a lot to him also. The long and late night talks that he and I have had since the accident happened have shown me that you meant more to him then just a boss, he has bonded with and accepts you as his own family. I know you have accepted him in as your family, also. You will never know how much it means to me. You gave him a chance.
Sorry this is so long but I had alot to thank you for because you’re such a great person.
Love Casey

Hey Flipo
Below is story from a friend of mine, her brother was in an accident years ago……
Sounds like he is a very strong person, so you never know how far beyond expectations that will take him. When Tim was run over by the car, they told us he probably won’t walk, definitely would never ski again and if he did it would be through a lot of therapy and a stay in a rehab center. He walked out of the hospital and never stepped foot in the rehab center. He was also a ski instructor a year later!!! Determination and prayer will take Phil a long way!!!!!

Phil –
If you’ve ever wondered just how many people love you and care about you, you have your answer now. I’m grateful that you’re still here with us; it was a scary couple of hours before we knew what was going on last week. Like other things that you’ve dealt with, you don’t have to go through this alone. People all over Columbus and beyond are thinking of you and sending positive light your way. Skyleur was glad that he got a chance to see you yesterday; our Thursdays will seem a little emptier now. Please let us know if you need anything or if we can do anything for you. You’re in my prayers in the morning and evening and a couple times during the day for good measure. (And don’t go breaking any nurses’ hearts; I’m sure you’re the best looking patient they’ve had in a long time!)

Phil,
I, along with my family, friends, and parish community, are praying for you daily. I added your name to my church’s prayer list in the hopes that the more who pray for you the less pain you will be in and the more strength you will have to overcome this.
When I describe you to my friends the word “funny” always comes out first. You always made me laugh when we visited your home when we were young. You may not remember this , but it always made us laugh, you would always say, “MOM, Megan is acting like a “hoosier,” or maybe it was reverse.
I apologize that has taken me so long to find your website, we had a hard time getting the correct mailing address from my mom, who, of course, is constantly thinking of you and praying for you too.

I’ll let my sister and father know about it as well. I wish the best for you and your family.

Phil,
To update my news, I completed the Tri-state Trek, to benifit ALSTDI, in good time and with the company of 157 other commited riders. We were blessed with an amazing series of days and crossed over beautiful stretches of the country, starting in Newton, MA, passing through Conn along winding roads that slipped from sloping hills to glorious views of the oceanside, through small towns and chasing granite block walls through the woods. It was truly a wonderous ride and we were gifted to have to people who rode with us who were fighting the effects of ALS. Young, old, slim and large, athletic and out-of-shape, the group was full of heart and full of determination. They rode through injury and strain, flat tires and fatigue, rain and shine. At the end of the ride, after arriving in White Plains, NY, we waited till every rider had arrived at the finish and then we recieved a police escourt and rode a 4 mile route through downtown White Plains, with people lining the roads ringing cowbells (the symbol of the ride) and cheering. At the very end, true to a long standing tradition, I dropped and with my bike on my back, I did push-ups with all my gear still on, until I couldn’t do them anymore.
I thought of you and of everyone who has had their lives limited by injury, disease, and accident and hoped that the energy and commitment of so few, could give hope to so many. I thought you would like to know the details of the last 3 miles that I rode in honor of your healing.
Best Wishes and a quick recovery,
Shawn.
(may I also recommend reading a book that I was reading during my downtime on the ride:
The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life by Robert Becker and Gary Selden, you may find some interesting answers to your healing and to pose to your doctors)

phil…
after yet ANOTHER referral i learned of your accident. i still can’t believe it. i think of you often everyday and want you to know the entire family is praying and pulling for you…myself, mike, charlie and madeline.
can you believe we met over 10 years ago when i basically forced your dad to sell me this house against his better judgement?! luckily you came in and made it beautiful several times over inside… and out. i still smile when i think of all the funny conversations we’ve had…i especially enjoyed comparing 80′s stories with you! whether it’s at the pool (always sunning yourself!…who am i to talk?), at caribou, or around my house painting, you’re always freindly and have a huge smile on your face. i’m looking forward to the day when i can see you again around town flashing your friendly smile!
good luck to you, stay strong, and know that you are in all of our prayers daily!

Phil,
Needless to say we were shocked when James (Murph) told us about your accident. I have just been able to get into this web site to let you know we are praying mightily for you and your recovery. As you know you are on the church pray chain and it is a VERY powerful line to God. So with God being besieged with prayers and you being in such fantastic condition physically, you are on the way to being one of the winners who have battled what you are going through. Hang in there Phil. You certainly have a ton of people praying and being a support system and God will take care. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God bless, Judy and Bill Gibeaut

Hello Phil,
You don’t know me, but we have a mutual friend… John McCutcheon… to whom I owe my life and deepest gratitude.
I ran into him yesterday on his way to see you and he told me your story. He knew I would understand, to some degree, what you are going through as I am currently in the midst of the fight myself. Along with quite a few other severe problems in my spine, I have two pedicle fractures in my L2 and am currently undergoing intensive therapy.
I don’t know what I could do to help you, except to tell you how inspired I was by your “we’ll see about that” attitude that John described to me. I know you’re going to be just fine… for whatever it’s worth… I could hear it in John’s voice. He described you as a truely wonderful person and I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that I know you are loved and I will be fighting right along with you.
I am not the sort of person that prays everyday, but lately I have been… this is a hard fight. I will keep you in my prayers and hopes. If there is anything I would wish for you is that you just keep going and keep yourself open to the love that surrounds you.
Take great care… and thank you.

Phil,
Jeff and I love you and are praying for you every day. This is all too crazy. Cole Chalfant called to tell us about what happened to you. Here we were in the hospital with our newborn baby and you were just going in to the hospital yourself. I have thought of you and prayed for you every day. I am just now looking through this website it is amazing! You are so loved.
My sister has helped me put together a website for our new baby Cole. If you want a chuckle you can check it out. colejohnston.blogspot.com. And no, we did not name our baby after Cole! (He is a great guy and all.) We just liked the name.
Hopefully it will not be long before I can see you in person. I have only been out of the house a few times since the birth. I’m hoping that I can go to our Thursday meeting this week.
Again, I love you and will keep praying. You have a lot of great friends. So many of them have called to update me about you.

I heard about your accident recently and I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers your way. You may remember me as John’s (JW) little sister Jen, though I can’t even remember the last time I saw you. Phil,
Kenny told me about the accident awhile back, but I didn;t know how to contact anyone about information on your progress. Shaun Gannon was nice enough to let in on the this wonderful site that has brought so much support to you and your family. When I saw you last year at the reunion, you were still the funny, caring Phil that I rememebered in high school. You filled me in on an accomplished that you recently had reached. Keep that strength during this time, you will be just as success… one day at a time.

This site is a true testament of your character and love that is shared amongst so many that you have touched. You are going to continue to touch more people than you could ever imagine. Along with the masses, your are included in my prayers daily. No one expects your journey to be filled with roses, but utilizing the enormous support system that is obviously surrounding you, your journey will undoubtedly be an incredible ride…….one day at a time.
Prayers and thoughts always,

What a shock! Today I e-mailed your parents about getting together for dinner on Saturday, Sept. 1, the night before the Family Reunion. With there reply, they sent Megan’s Web Site. I am still in shock.
Just finished reading all the comments and I believe just like everyone else on this list – That you are going to beat this thing.
There are so many family members, friends and with your innner strength you will pull through.
Keep the head up and keep pushing. We are all pulling and pushing with you.
All our prayers for a complete recovery.

Dear Phil,
I know this may seem formal, but you do not know us very well. I am your second cousin and sister to Jim and Becky Davis. Of course through the years, I have heard so much about you from Dick and Nancy and I believe we even met at least once at the Jones Reunion.
I was so very sorry to hear about your accident and trauma to your spinal cord. I was touched by this website that Megan has created. It is awesome. What a wonderful way for you to hear from all your friends and family that are behind you through this daily struggle. From the many stories I have heard about you, I know that you have an unwavering determination.
Bob and I live in south Florida and from way down here, we wish you all the best. Megan has shown that during difficult times is when familes become closer than ever. We will be thinking of you and wishing you progess every day.
Hopes and prayers, Bob and Kay

Dear Phil,
Just like my brother I am in shock. Even though I only go to the the Jones Family Reunion every three or four years I always expect to see the same people, we eat and visit and the only change is the younger kids get bigger all the time. I never expect someone I am related to, to have an accident such as yours.
I am also in awe of the website your sister has created. I have read through all the comments and it seems to have all been said by people who know you better than I do. What I know is the heritage you come from. You come from strong stock. My grandmother and your great grandmother was a force to be reckoned with to her 104th birthday. Aunt Katie slowed down a little sooner but not by much. So with those genes I have great faith in you and the progress you will make toward recovery.
I also just want to make clear that just because I live in Gainesvill Florida I am not nor will ever be a Gator fan or part of their Gator Nation. It is my sister who left the message before mine that went to the University of Florida and still comes up to the football games. (I noticed she failed to mention that).
So, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Keep your faith .

Phil,
How ya doin? I’m adjusting to this Southern living slowly. The weather I will say is always sunny, which makes the pool even nicer. Lots of beautiful flowers if ya know what I mean. Jess loves it here. Her classes are great and she is enjoying being a teachers assistant. I’m slowly getting a work flow down. The only problem I have is the loneliness, so we went a got 2 puppies from the pound. They are lab mixes and we named them Emma and Zoey. I hope your adjusting well. I think about how you are a lot. Keep up the positive attitude and things will continue to get better. Please call if you ever want to talk. Take it easy.

I’m so glad that we have mutual friends that keep me up on this website. I feel so disconnected from the UA crowd up here in Medina. (I guess that’s not ALL bad). I think about you and your family often. I can’t imagine the challenges you are dealing with, although I continually marvel at your support system on this website. Please know that we make contacts that last a lifetime, even though separated by distance. I hope that we are in Columbus for one of your “parties” one of these days.
