Hey Phil,
You and the whole entire Henry family have been in our thoughts and prayers ever since we learned of your accident. I must tell you that you have many well wishers here in Central Pa at Sovereign Bank and all those we saw over the weekend at Lost Mountain, including Wanda and Skeeter.
We know you are one determined guy and you certainly have that Henry spirit working in your favor. You have many blessings and positive thoughts being directed your way.
We love ya and will keep in touch in reference to your continued progress. Love, Beth and Mike

Dear Phil,
It was great to see you this morning! You look absolutely great and your spirit was inspirational!
You know how much the Low & Sell’s families consider you one of us! Now that is a scary thought – “Phil Sells” – “little brother John”!!!
We always considered it a joy and priviledge to have you over for Thanksgiving and any other time – especally when we needed something from you – like painting services on a last minute’s notice!
Now it is our turn – whether you reach out or not we will be there. Anything we can do we will.
You are in our constant thoughts and prayers!
We truly love you and know your fighting and conquering spirit will prevail!

I said a prayer today to give you some peace with the pain. You keep doing what they tell you. Get some rest, your body is just yelling at you through the pain, because you have kept it busy in a different way the past week!!!!
You will be in worship with us today at King Ave. MUCH LOVE, Deneen, Kendall and the King Ave UMC family. Sending much love to the entire Henry Family also.

Lots of love to all of you Henrys, and will check in again tomorrow. Keep plugging away Phil, sunshine, laughter and prayers are better than anyhting the dr can give you!!!!

Hello…we are unlikely to ever meet, however judging by the description of your disability, we share the same level of injury. I was injured in 1972 BC (before computers). I was 18. Barring any severe medical complications, you have a good shot at living a long, productive and relatively normal life. It’s probably not the life you would have chosen, but I can assure you that your future is far brighter than you can imagine now. Each month will be slightly easier than it’s predecessor.
I’ve used a manual wheelchair 35 years. There have been a lot of crackpot “cures” in that time. All of them have been complete nonsense.
I’m glad you have the prayers of your family & friends, but your truest friends are the ones that hang tough with you for the long haul (you will find that talk is cheap and that true friends are worth their weight in diamonds). Believe me, life in a wheelchair is akin to a long haul up loose rock, but difficult isn’t the same as impossible.
You can lay down and die, or get up and fly. (by the way, I have more than one friend with your level of injury who pilot their own airplane).
To keep from boring you, I’ll bring this to a close with some suggestions:
*DO NOT EAT LIKE YOU ARE BEING PAID FOR IT, YOU CANNOT TAKE WEIGHT OFF IN A WHEELCHAIR ONCE YOU PUT IT ON. Grandma wants to smother you with love by baking for you. If you become overweight, you will regret it.
*At the earliest possible time acquire a lowered floor minivan to drive. Braun Entervan makes a superb vehicle modification. Ask me more if you have questions. Being able to drive is the vital, indispensible key to independence.
*You will be able to work and earn a living.
*Social Security rules are a nightmare. They have powerful disincentives for people who want to work. Just warning you.
*You’ll have good days and bad days. Eventually, the good days will outnumber the bad days. That’s life.
*You will have bladder infections, muscle aches, chills, sweats, headaches, skin problems, bowel problems and muscle spasms (and that’s the short list). Medications help up to a point, but all of them have side effects. You will become adept at becoming your own pharmacist. No one will know your body better then you.
*Dan & Cathy Workman suggested I contact you. Feel free to contact me if you think I can be of any particular help. My experience won’t be exactly identical to yours, but when it comes to spinal injury, I’ve ‘been there, done that, bought the T-shirt’. I’ve been program manager at an independent living center, program developer at an assistive technology corporation, worked on a rehab floor in a hospital and now sell mobility products for people with disabilities.
Warm regards,
Henry

Phil,
I can’t believe you picked my name! Although I’d love to come to Columbus and see you on the 12th, it’s just not in the cards for me. My son Patrick who is a senior football player has his homecoming game that weekend. So I need to be a good mom and cheer him on!
I will find friends or family in Columbus who will be thrilled to use them!!
I’m glad to hear you are having some good days. Keep up the good spirits! Everybody is still wishing you the very best, we love you.
Cousin,
Big O

Phil, I read about your situation at the bearalums web site. You seem to have a great attitude about it and that is very important.
We don’t know each other–I was Class of 1966– but I am thinking of you and pulling for you, here in San Diego.
