Dear Phil,
So sorry to hear about your accident; it must have been terribly frightening for you. You are one brave person.
I fond memories of our time in real estate school’ can you believe that was 21 years ago!? I get to see your dad at the office and visited them at their house last summer. You’ve got great folks and they’ve got a great son:)

Phil, you and your family are in my prayers but it feels so insufficient to say so… This morning, I received a devotional email that says it all so much better than I can. God is with you – continue in that Faith.
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with
the glory that will be revealed in us.” – Romans 8:18
Christians are not immune from suffering or tragedy, nor are
suffering and hardship necessarily signs of a lack of faith.
Christians are people who are called to embrace the challenges of
this life, to stand firm in difficult times, because in Jesus Christ
we trust that God is at work in every circumstance of life,
preparing us for eternity.
Still, Christians frequently wonder why we suffer. Why does God
allow it? Quite frankly, knowing the answer to the question, “Why do
we suffer?” won’t help us. Would it really help a mother to know why
her child has cancer? Would it really help a family to know why a
hurricane destroyed their home? Would it really matter if a father
knew why he was lost in poverty and could not provide for his
family? Ultimately, I don’t think so.
When a child is afraid of the dark, afraid of the monster that lives
under the bed, it is a foolish parent who comes in, turns the light
on, makes the child look under the bed and then turns off the light
and leaves. The wise parent comes into the child’s room, lies down
in the bed with that child, wraps their arms around them in the dark
and whispers in their ear, “It’s OK honey, I’m here with you.”
God knows our suffering and pain. But God has chosen not to answer
our “whys”. Instead, God comes into the pain and suffering of our
lives in the person of Jesus, wraps us in arms that were spread wide
on the cross and whispers in our ears, “I love you and I am here
with you. I know what it is to suffer and not only will I walk with
you through your suffering but I will use it to bless you. And one
day, because I suffered for you, by faith you will enter into a
life, an eternal life, in which there will be no more pain, no more
sickness, no more tears, and no more death.”
Why do people suffer? God could have given us an answer to satisfy
our heads. But instead he’s given us an answer that satisfies our
hearts. And his name is Jesus.
If you’re hurting today I want to encourage you with the Good News
that you are not alone, that you are not forgotten. You have the
presence of God and God’s people to stand with you through difficult
times, and the assurance that in Jesus’ hands even suffering can
serve a holy purpose.
And if you’re walking with someone who is suffering, know that your
ears and your presence are more powerful and more healing than your
words. Let God work through you to bring hope to a seemingly
hopeless situation. While hope has a name, and his name is Jesus –
hope also has a face, and can look just like yours.
Bringing It Home
1. How have you sensed God’s presence in the midst of
suffering? What difference has it made for you?
2. Who do you know that is going through a difficult time right
now? How can you be the face of hope in their experience?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for the hope of the Gospel. Thank you for your
promised presence in the midst of hardship and suffering and pain.
Give me and all who are going through hard times, patience in
suffering, perseverance in hardship and a clear focus on the prize
at the end of this life. Help me to be the face of hope to those who
are struggling in life today. Allow our friendship to be a bridge
that you might cross to enter their lives. In Jesus’ name I pray.
Amen.

Dear Phil:
Your brothers and sisters at UALC Tae Kwon Do want you to know that we are praying for you daily and before and after every class when we kneel for prayer.
Our hearts go out to you at this very difficult time of physical, mental and spiritual challenge.
It is interesting that you just attained Senior belt status and this happens. As a Senior belt we begin to teach others the lessons of Tae Kwon Do and model the tenants. You are already doing that. You model Perseverence and an Indomitable Spirit…..
You are a strong person on many levels and we know you will make it through this test with flying colors.
I update the class at every session as I share your battle and encourage them to be grateful, as is your trademark, and to continue to persevere in the face of adversity.
Continue to occupy your mind with the forms, (Pal Gwe), and when the time is right I’ll catch you up on your curriculum.
Your classmates will visit you when you are in rehab and have gained more energy. We want you to have peace and rest right now.
Sincerely and Prayerfully,
UALC Tae Kwon Do

Hey Phil,
So sorry to hear about your accident. I just ran into a friend yesterday who told me about this web site so I wanted to say Hi and wish you well.
I know this must be an incredibly difficult and uncertain time for you. You have always been such a positive inspiration to me, and I know the strengths you’ve developed in dealing with other challenges will certainly benefit you now.
I don’t know much, but I do know that there’s NOTHING a person can’t overcome with faith in a high power. And I do know that greatness most often arises within a person when they face their most difficult challenges. From what I know of you I believe you’ll find greatness in this difficult situation.
Remember, nothing heals like faith and a positive attitude.

Hi Phil,
We just recently found out about your accident. So weird because I (Chris) was just thinking about you while driving by your brother’s place. Wondered what you were up to these days–didn’t expect this. We are both here sitting in Bruster’s Ice Cream shop just finishing a nice treat. I (Chris) am manager here and am inviting you to come for a visit and get some ice cream on the house–which is what I (Susan) do all the time!!
It looks like you have great support from family and friends. We will pray for you and please let us know if there is anything we can do.
LCC is celebrating their 10th anniversary this month. They have a display and album with pictures in it which you are in. You must either come to the worship celebation on Sept. 8th (p.m.) or the Sept 9th picnic.
Wish we could have reconnected under better circumstances. Always remember that God is in everything. Jeremiah 29:11
Take care.

Sorry it’s been some time getting a post up on your site, but Uncle Sam has kept me busy as of late and the internet in the middle of the ocean is marginal at best. I was glad I was able to get over and see you at OSU while I was on leave, albeit a short visit, it was great to see you in better spirits than I anticipated. Hi Phil:
Sending you a message of hope. I came across your website today. I had a painting accident in the early 1980s, exposure to paint chemicals. I was largely blind from my accident and with serious lung problems and other complications. My steps in recovering were miniscule on a daily, weekly and sometimes monthly basis, but kept moving forward, sometimes 2 steps ahead and 1 back. At any rate, letting you know that after many, many years, I recovered well and now more than 20 years later, I am 99% recovered, have run many marathons, and lead a full and productive life, with much appreciation for each day and everyone in it. I am pulling for you with an equal amount of hope. Determination is omnipotent. Never give up, man.
